Berry Global’s Cleanstream technologies receives FDA approval

US – Berry Global’s CleanStream recycling technology, has been granted a Letter of No Objection (LNO) from the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

The LNO confirms that the post-consumer recycled (PCR) PP produced by the CleanStream process can be used in levels up to 100% recycled content for food contact applications.

CleanStream is Berry’s proprietary, world-leading process and the first to be able to identify and separate food-use items from mixed domestic collections.

One of its major benefits is that it can operate within existing waste management infrastructures.

Automated sorting and decontamination processes that integrate online sensor technologies and machine learning algorithms remove the need for the use of markers or other digital technologies.

“CleanStream is initial and perfect in its form. The award of FDA LNO status is a great achievement and highlights Berry’s worldwide leadership in recycling and developing sustainable packaging selections,” said Mark Roberts, Circular Worth Chain Director, Berry International Buyer Packaging International.

Berry says CleanStream PCR-PP has been extensively tested across a selection of products and processes with exceptionally great final outcomes.

“The target markets for this material all get in touch with-sensitive applications, especially cosmetics and private care, as efficiently as meals get in touch with,” stated Mark Roberts.

“Following the helpful approval of the US FDA LNO, we will now seek EU approvals for the material for meals packaging applications.”

CleanStream has received funding from the UK Evaluation and Innovation Sensible Sustainable Plastics Packaging Challenge, which will support the application of the material for EU approvals.

According to an in-depth life cycle evaluation (LCA) by main LCA specialists Quantis, the approach generates 35% lower CO2 emissions than virgin polypropylene production, and packaging designed from the material will have a 20% lower impact.

In addition, replacing pure PP will lessen the CO2 impact of plastic packaging by 13,104 tons of CO2 per year.
